The first time you slip out of your body, the sensation is one of weightlessness, a shedding of the mundane shell. You float, tethered by a silver cord of shimmering light, and you feel a surge of euphoria. But if you are paying attention—if you are truly aware—you will notice something else. A hum. A vibration that is not sound but pressure, a thrumming beneath the skin of reality. That hum is the song of your energy bodies, and it is not a lullaby. It is a warning. Most practitioners of astral projection and lucid dreaming speak of chakras as spinning wheels of colorful light, fountains of vitality to be balanced and aligned. They speak of the aura as a protective bubble, a shield against negativity. They are telling you a comforting fairy tale. The truth is far more sinister. The energy body is not a fortress; it is a porous, flickering membrane that separates your fragile consciousness from a vast, hungry ocean of things that should not be. And in the liminal space of the astral plane, those things know you are there.
The Anatomy of a Lie: What You Are Really Made Of
You are not a single entity. You are a nesting doll of frequencies, each layer vibrating at a different rate, each one a potential doorway. The physical body is the densest, the anchor. But wrapped around it, interpenetrating it, is the etheric body—the blueprint, the template of your form. It is here that the chakras are said to reside, not as pretty flowers, but as vortices of raw, unprocessed energy. In the waking world, these vortices spin at a manageable pace, drawing in prana, or life force, to fuel your existence. But when you project, when you consciously detach your astral body from the physical, these vortices do not merely spin. They gape. They become open wounds, bleeding your energetic signature into the void and, more terrifyingly, allowing the void to seep into you. The seven main chakras are not points of light; they are seven distinct vulnerabilities, seven unlatched gates through which a traveler might enter—or be entered by—something else.
The Root Chakra: The Weight of the Earthbound
Begin at the base of your spine, the Muladhara. In daylight, it is your connection to the earth, your grounding. In the astral, it becomes a dead weight. When you project, you may feel an immense pressure, a pulling sensation at the base of your spine. This is not your physical body calling you back; it is the root chakra anchoring you to a lower frequency. Many projectors report seeing dark, shadowy figures in the periphery of their vision during the early stages of exit. They are not spirits. They are the detritus of the root chakra—the accumulated fear, survival instinct, and primal terror that you have suppressed in your waking life. In the astral, this sludge becomes semi-autonomous. It coalesces into shapes, into whispers, into grasping hands that claw at your ankles, trying to drag you back down into the mire of your own subconscious. If you are not careful, you will mistake these entities for demons. You will fight them, and in fighting them, you will feed them. The root chakra is the basement of your soul, and in the astral, the basement is always flooded with something you do not want to touch.
The Sacral and Solar Plexus: The Thrumming of Desire
Higher up, at the sacral chakra (Svadhisthana), the seat of desire and emotion, the astral plane offers you your deepest fantasies. You will see them. A loved one, a lost pet, a perfect landscape. It is a lure. This chakra, when opened in the astral, does not radiate orange light; it radiates a sticky, viscous energy that clings to you. It amplifies your cravings until they become unbearable. You will feel a desperate hunger, a bottomless lust, a profound sadness that feels like it will swallow you whole. This is not your emotion; it is the chakra acting as an antenna, picking up the ambient emotional static of the astral plane and broadcasting it directly into your consciousness. The solar plexus (Manipura), the seat of will and ego, is worse. In the astral, it becomes a furnace of arrogance. You will feel a surge of power, a belief that you are invincible, that you can command the shadows. Do not. The moment you assert your will with pride, you create a beacon. You are announcing your presence to the predators of the subtle realms. They are drawn to the heat of the solar plexus like moths to a guttering flame, and they will extinguish it.
The Heart Chakra: The Hollow Vessel
The heart chakra, Anahata, is the most dangerous of all. In life, it is the seat of love and compassion. In the astral, love is a frequency that attracts. But it also attracts parasites. When you project with an open heart, you are broadcasting a signal of vulnerability, of receptivity. The entities of the astral plane do not feel love; they feel warmth. They are drawn to it, not to bask in it, but to consume it. They will approach you, not as monsters, but as gentle presences, as guides, as beings of pure light. They will offer you wisdom, comfort, a sense of cosmic unity. They are wearing the mask of your own heart chakra. They will siphon your energy, leaving you feeling hollow, exhausted, and inexplicably empty upon waking. The worst part is the silence. When they are done, the heart chakra does not close. It remains ajar, a hollow chamber that echoes with the absence of what was taken. You will feel it for days, a cold spot in your chest that no amount of physical warmth can fill.
The Throat and Third Eye: The Silencing and the Seeing
The throat chakra (Vishuddha) is the gate of expression. In the astral, you will find that you cannot scream. You will try to speak, to call out for help, and only a thin, reedy whisper will escape. The vibration of this chakra in the astral is one of constriction. It is the fear of speaking your truth, made manifest. The entities you encounter will use this against you. They will whisper things into your ear, things you cannot repeat, things that are designed to break your will. And you will be unable to voice your dissent. The third eye (Ajna) is the most seductive trap. You will see things, it is true. You will see the geometry of the universe, the threads of fate, the true forms of the beings around you. But the third eye is not a window; it is a projection screen. What you see is what you are allowed to see. The astral plane is a filter, and your third eye is the lens. If you look too long, the lens cracks. You will begin to see the real reality behind the projection—the dark, indifferent machinery of the void. This sight is a curse. It does not bring enlightenment; it brings a profound, existential dread that will follow you into your waking life, coloring every moment with the knowledge that the universe is not a friendly place.
The Crown Chakra: The Open Door
The crown chakra, Sahasrara, is the final gate. It is the connection to the divine, the ultimate goal of many practitioners. In the astral, it is a trapdoor. When you open the crown chakra, you are not connecting to a benevolent god. You are opening the roof of your consciousness to the entirety of the astral storm. You will feel a pressure, a crushing weight on the top of your head. You will hear a sound like a thousand screams, all happening at once. This is the noise of the void, the static of a million disembodied consciousnesses all vying for a host. If you open this chakra too wide, too fast, you will not achieve cosmic consciousness. You will achieve possession. The entities will pour in through the crown, flooding your energy body, overwriting your memories, your thoughts, your sense of self. You will wake up feeling like a stranger in your own body, with gaps in your memory and a lingering sense of wrongness. You will look in the mirror and see your own eyes, but you will know, with chilling certainty, that something else is looking back.
The Silver Cord: A Rope of Rotting Light
And what of the silver cord, that lifeline that supposedly keeps you safe? It is not a cord of pure light. It is a tendril of sickly, grayish luminescence, pulsing with a rhythm that is not your heartbeat. It is the only thing tethering you to your physical form, and it is fraying. With each projection, with each lucid dream, the cord thins. It is not a safety mechanism; it is an umbilical cord that has been left attached too long. The entities of the astral plane know this. They will not attack you directly; they will attack the cord. They will gnaw at it, pulling at it, trying to sever the connection so that you become a permanent resident of their realm. If the cord snaps, you do not die. That would be a mercy. You become a ghost, a wandering consciousness, trapped in the astral, slowly losing your memories until you are nothing more than another whisper in the static, another shadow in the periphery, waiting for the next naive projector to cross your path.
The Return: The Rot That Remains
When you finally manage to force yourself back into your body, the relief is overwhelming. But the horror is not over. The energy bodies are slow to close. The chakras, once forced open, do not snap shut. They flutter, like wounded eyelids. For hours, sometimes days, you will feel a lingering presence. You will feel a cold draft in a warm room. You will see movement in the corner of your eye. You will hear your name whispered in an empty house. This is the residue. The entities you encountered, the ones you fed with your fear, they have left a mark. They have imprinted themselves onto your energy field. They are waiting. They know your patterns now. They know the taste of your energy. They will be waiting for you the next time you close your eyes, the next time you slip into that lucid dream, the next time you feel that familiar hum of the astral plane. And this time, they will be ready. The energy body is not a gift; it is a leash. And the chakras are the collars. You are not a traveler; you are a lamb, wandering into the slaughterhouse, wearing a bell that announces your arrival. Sleep well.
