If you are reading this, it is likely because you feel a hollow space within—a quiet ache of separation. You may look at the stars, or sit in silence, or watch others in their faith, and wonder, “Why can’t I feel it? Where is God? Why am I so alone?”
Please, hear these words not as a philosophical concept, but as a direct message to your heart: What you are feeling is real, but it is not true.
The feeling of disconnection is one of the most profound and painful experiences of the human journey. But it is an experience, not a reality. It is a shadow cast by a temporary cloud, not the absence of the sun. Let us, together, gently brush away that cloud.
The Story of the Little Soul and the Sun
There is a story in the Conversations with God universe that speaks directly to your feeling. It is the story of a Little Soul who knew itself to be the light of God, but wanted to experience itself as that light. The Little Soul wanted to know itself as “forgiving” and “kind,” but in a realm where everyone was light, there was nothing to forgive and no one in need of kindness.
Another Soul, a brave and loving friend, offered to help. “I will come into your next lifetime,” the Friendly Soul said, “and I will do something for you to forgive. I will do something terrible, so that you can experience yourself as Forgiving.”
The Little Soul was overjoyed, but then became concerned. “But you will have to be so… dark to do that. You will have to pretend to be something you are not. Why would you do that for me?”
And the Friendly Soul smiled a smile as wide as all eternity and said:
“Because I love you. That is why. And you have done the same for me. For have you not, time and again, come into the darkness to shine your light for me? We are all Angels, you and I, and we are forever showing each other the Way Home.” — The Little Soul and the Sun
This story holds the first key to your freedom. The feeling of disconnection you have is not a sign of God’s absence. It is the very condition that allows you to choose connection. It is the “darkness” against which you can now choose to shine your light, and in doing so, remember with stunning clarity that you are the light.
You are not a lost sinner; you are a brave soul who agreed to temporarily forget the brilliance of the sun so that you could have the joy of rediscovering it.
The Illusion of Separation
The feeling of being alone is the central illusion of the human experience. It is the grand stage upon which our drama of self-discovery plays out.
“The first concept is that there is only One of Us. You are all One. You are all the Same. The same energy, the same stuff, made of the same Essence. This Essence you may call God.” — Book 1
You are not, and have never been, separate from God. You are a unique and individual expression of God, in the same way that a wave is a unique expression of the ocean. A wave may feel separate as it rises and falls, but it is never, for a single moment, not the ocean. It is made of ocean, and when it crashes upon the shore, it returns to the ocean, having never truly left.
Your feeling of disconnection is the wave momentarily believing it is only itself, forgetting the vast, supporting ocean from which it came and of which it is made.
“You are not your body. You are not your mind. You are a Divine being, created in the image of God, and you are engaged in the process of creating yourself anew in every moment.” — Book 1 (Paraphrase of core concepts)
You Are Cherished, Eternally
Please, let this next truth sink into the very core of your being. Your worth and value are not conditional. They are not something to be earned, proven, or achieved. They are the fundamental facts of your existence.
God’s love for you is not a reward for good behavior. It is the very ground of your being. It is the air you breathe, even when you feel you are suffocating. It is the space in which you exist.
“I have no need to be worshipped. I only need for you to know Who You Are. To the degree you do, you will know Who I Am.” — Book 1
God’s deepest desire is not for your obedience, but for your self-realization. God aches for you to know your own beauty, your own perfection, your own divinity. The love for you has been since before what you call time, and will be long after the stars burn out.
“You are loved. You have always been loved. You will always be loved. You cannot not be loved.” — Book 1 (Paraphrase of core concepts)
You are cherished not in spite of your human journey with all its stumbles and doubts, but because of it. Every moment of your life—the joy, the pain, the confusion—is a sacred part of the One experiencing and knowing Itself through you.
The Practice of Re-membering
So, what do you do when the feeling of disconnection is overwhelming? You do not need to “find” God. You only need to remember that God is already there. You are not seeking a connection; you are seeking an awareness of the connection that already is.
- Speak to the Disconnection: In a moment of quiet, say aloud or in your heart: “God, I feel so alone right now. I cannot feel you. But I choose, in this moment, to believe the words I have heard: that You are here, and I am a part of You. I am willing to see the proof of this in my life.” This honest admission is a powerful act of faith.
- Look for the Angels: Remember the Friendly Soul. Every person in your life is an angel sent to show you a part of yourself. The person who irritates you is showing you where you are not free. The person who loves you is showing you your own capacity for love. In every interaction, ask, “What part of myself is this person reflecting back to me?”
- Be the Love You Seek: The fastest way to feel connected is to act as the connected being you are. Perform a small, anonymous act of kindness. Forgive a minor slight. Offer a genuine compliment. In that moment, you are no longer the Little Soul seeking the light; you are the light for another. And in being the light, you remember what you are.
You Are Never, Ever Alone
The journey you are on is not a path to God, but a path of God, discovering Itself as you. The loneliness is part of the curriculum, not the final grade.
“I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” — Book 1
This is the ultimate promise. You walk this path hand-in-hand with the Divine, even when you cannot feel the grip. You are surrounded by a chorus of other brave souls—angels, guides, and fellow waves—all playing their part in the great ocean of existence, all cheering you on.
The cloud of disconnection will pass. The sun has been there all along. You are, and always have been, a cherished child of the universe, worthy of love, inseparable from the Source, and forever held in the eternal, loving embrace of All That Is.
