What is a chakra?
Chakra is a Sanskrit word for “wheel”. Chakras are often seen by healers and psychic intuitives as spinning wheels of light, vortices, or funnels of energy and are the configuration in the structure of the energy field of the body. In Eastern tradition, the chakras are depicted as lotuses. Their spirals of light indicate the contrasting energies of psyche and spirit: the fiery energies or darker helix contrast with the lighter, spiritual energies and lighter helix, all of which must be brought together in balance. They are more commonly known as the centers of the Endocrine System in Western medical terminology.
There are seven major chakras of the body:
| CHAKRA | NO. | ENDOCRINE GLAND | COLOR | FUNCTION |
| Crown | 7 | Pineal | Violet-White | Upper Brain, Right Eye |
| Forehead | 6 | Pituitary | Indigo | Lower Brain, Left Eye, Ears, Nose, Nervous System |
| Throat | 5 | Thyroid | Blue | Bronchial & Vocal Apparatus, Lungs, Alimentary Canal |
| Heart | 4 | Thymus | Green – Pink | Heart, Blood, Vagus Nerve, Circulatory System |
| Solar Plexus | 3 | Pancreas | Yellow – Gold | Stomach, Liver, Gall Bladder, Nervous System |
| Sacral | 2 | Gonads | Orange | Reproductive System |
| Base | 1 | Adrenals | Red | Spinal Column, Kidneys |
Each major chakra is located on the front of the body and is paired with its counterpart on the back of the body. Together they are considered to be the front and rear aspect of one chakra. The frontal aspects are related to the person’s feelings – the rear ones to his will and the three located on the head – to his mental processes.
